I think suicide is the ultimate selfish act. For some strange reason, suicide seems to run in families--if you commit suicide you are leaving a legacy where someone else in your family is more likely to do the same thing.
My uncle comitted suicide, he shot himself in the head right on the front door step of his house, and his son saw him do it. My cousin is going to have to live with that memory for the rest of his life. My uncle's older son became a doctor. He was a psychatrist but he decided he didn't like psychiatry, so he worked as a general practitioner. He was also in the army reserves. His wife caught him fooling around with other women and she took all of his money out of his bank account. He also got called to serve in the army for Desert Storm and he didn't want to go. He shot himself like his father had done. His children, brothers and sisters, and other family members felt a mixture of grief and anger.
I also have a history of depression and I have considered suicide; the main thing that stops me is the thought of what I would do to my family.
If you are thinking of killing yourself, please tell a doctor and get treatment.

No more than any other act is selfish. Most people who say it is selfish have never experienced true suicidal feelings, and don't understand how someone can feel so bad that suicide is seen to be the best option.

Suicide is an act undertaken by an individual that is frowned upon by a society that does not understand it, and through demeaning and judging the outsider is acting selfishly himself. ‘I think this is what this person should have done’ means ‘this person should have done what I think is right’. Judging someone else by your own thoughts and beliefs regardless of their own thoughts and beliefs is selfish.

Most people who would see a suicide as selfish are people who would ask themselves 'could I have helped more?' - it is a fear of guilt disguised by blaming the one person who can no longer argue his or her case.

If you're having suicidal thoughts people that love you will try to help you, they won't tell you not to because it's selfish, or that things will get better or you're just being attention seeking, they will offer their help in what way they can, and if all else fails then it is an indivuals decision to take their life, and who is anyone to say what someone should do with the most personal thing anybody has?

I personally don't agree with them, but I don't think that it's not selfish.

My point of view on the situation is that someone is probably very unhappy and there is no one that seems to want to help him/her. The friends and family of that person should know that there is something going on with that person and they should try to help that person, not ignore the fact that there is something that is troubleing that person. Usually when there is something wrong with that person, you can usually tell.

There is always places to get help with problems and issues like these. I think that it is a personal decision if that person if they want to recieve professional help or what not. If there is a load on someone that they need to let up, that depends on if they want to tell anyone or if they trust someone to tell.

I think that they should try to get help for their problems first... Hey, if nothing works out and all people give you is crap, then I would say... Why not?

If the people that are around them don't care enough not to get someone help and then give them more reason, then why not? The guilty feelings are sometimes payback or a message that you need help...

If you've ever seen the movie Ginger Snaps, there is a phrase in there that most people agree with, not that you will.

"Suicide is the ultimate f*** you."

That's just my opinion, no one has to agree with it.

Of course it is. You would be leaving your loved ones with so many unanswered questions. Maybe you would take away your own pain but you'd leave so much more pain with your family. But then if someone really feels like they want to commit suicide, then I can't really judge. I don't think I would ever do it but maybe I've never felt depressed enough to consider it properly.

Also, no matter how worthless you might think your life is, there is always something you can do to help someone else.

Of course committing suicide is selfish because you are only thinking about yourself and you think you are the only one that has problems and it's not true because there are a lot of people that are going to suffer once you die. So don't do it.

I think if any one has thoughts of suicide and actually have that as an option then they should really get medical help. many times in our lives we get side tracked in the hurricane of our problems that we dont see the clear picture of even how others truely love and care for us. so having a mind set that no one whould even care if we were here or not is untrue and a lie. It is hard sometimes to think clearly when we are set in a moment of total helplessness or at least feeling that way. Others may see a way out of our dispare if we would just reach out and get the help. There is no reason to kill ur self just to cause a ripple of hurtness for others. Yes it is selfish. ur not only hurting ur self but u are hurting others. God will never give u more then u can carry and the truth is..... he dont even want us to carry it. HE wants to carry our burdines for us! All we really have to do is truely give it all to him and sit back and let God work. We are the ones who choose to carry our stress and burdines alone but he is here to do it. So really killing ur self is pointless when u really had no need to be stressing in the first place if we did what we were sposed to do.... Give it to GOD!

I guess to some degree it's selfish as far as how you affected others in your life -- loving, hating , whatever. Or what if you do something later that rocks the world ! But I suppose if no one loved you and you were basically worthless with no "rock power" -- then no, you'd be clear of 'selfish' .

Suicide leaves many people behind to carry guilt around with them for the rest of their lives, because they didn't do anything to stop it. No one really needs to commit suicide. There is plenty of help out there for those who are troubled.
