we cant choose which body parts to lose the weight off - it has to be overall weight loss.
dont overobsess with sit ups and crunches - they will only make your belly look bigger since there is gona be more muscle underneath the layer of fat.
and cardio is the only way to lose fat 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, combine it with light weight training.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

the nice way would be to buy the pants and say nothing, or tell her that u r gonna take her shopping because she deserves it. tell her that u need to go on a diet and u want support from her, but instead u help her loose the weight. just dont say anything direct to her face, nobody likes to be told they look fat, i mean how would u like it if someone came up 2 u and told u that ur stomach is horrible and unattractive even if they meant it in the most possible nicest way.

cardio. You may be genetically "wired" to store fat there. That means you have to burn off fat in general to see results in that area. If you tend to store fat there, unfortunately that will probably be the last place you will lose fat. There is no such thing as "spot training". Pilates will help greatly in toning your midsection. Cut out sugar and cut down on carbs also.
