Religion tries to explain the universe in spiritual terms with no true foundation other than faith. Evolution tries to explain how we came about based on scientific evidence. But as to your question, no, religions are not the greatest failure of evolution. As a matter of fact, they help prove it. With the current state of the world, it's obvious that the individual religions are fighting to be the "true" religion to the masses - and the fight is a kill or be killed type of battle. Isn't that (survival of the fittest) a basic belief of evolution?

How could religion possibly be a failure of a myth?
But lets take your question at face value and I'll answer it according to your folly.
No religion does not impede the continuation of a species but actually helps preserve it. All religions have laws regarding the treatment of your fellow man to ensure that you and your neighbor have a long a fruitful life thus ensuring the continuation of the species. Yes there is violence against other nations or peoples in religion. Even that could be argued is to insure that outside influence's that would be considered evil and cause the discontinuation of a happy and productive life would be removed. In otherwords removing the defective from the gene pool (and aside I love the Darwin Awards).
A better question that perhaps you evolution, there is no God, everything is okay due to moral relativism as long as your not hurting anyone else adherents,... get ready.
Is homosexuality, since you claim its genetic, the greatest failure of evolution since it is a dead end for a species?
(That means homosexuals can't reproduce just in case there was any confusion.)

Not necessarily - or at least not in a general sense.
I think think the failure is that religious beliefs are not evolving at the same pace as the human race is.
If religion would continuously update to reflect what is actually happening in the world we would not have all these problems (jihads, abortion protests [for and against] homosexuality issues, etc).

Wrong my friend!...The "greatest" failure of evolution is not giving enough brain of some people so they can be able to accept that each and every one of us has the right to think and believe our very own way.

How could you possibly think that even if you don't believe in religion? How about the prison population or all the other species we have wiped off the face of the earth. I could go on, suffice it to say this world would probably be a lot worse if there was no religion or only one religion.

No, religions are a step in social and governmental evolution. It will go the way of the dinosaur if we can continue to illuminate the dark recesses of our ignorance.

I would put any number of inheritable diseases, plus men's nipples, high on the list. But religion, a function of our ability to think about the future, was dependant on the development of the frontal lobe, one of the greatest evolutionary accomplishments separating humans from the rest of the animal kingdom.

If you think about it, belief in Evolution could be considered a religion in itself.
It takes just as much faith (if not more) to believe that the entire universe was created out of absolutly nothing, than it would to believe that there was a God.
Evolution View in a nutshell:
Billions of years ago, nothing became something. All the matter of the universe (which as we know can not be destroyed, but only change forms) squeezed into a space smaller than the dot on this "i", and then it exploded. From that one incident all things were created. Overtime, lifeless matter all of the sudden came to life. (Now please note the miracle of this event: Without help, just by chance, life-less mater came alive. To this day, scientists can not do this. Even in a labritory, it cannot be done.) This life evolved to be every different species and creature that you see today... plants, animals, humans, etc.
Creationist Point of view in a nutshell:
About 6 thousand years ago, God created the heavens and the earth. He had a purpose abd a plan.
So There.

It actually hasn't completed yet. The followers of religion will kill eachother leaving those more fit for survival, "non-believers". This is how things would have gone if not for the invention of bombs. Now all the religious wackos have the ability to take the rational people along with them. Great isn't it?
