A dive bar, or simply a dive, is a drinking establishment (or sometimes a restaurant) with a dated or run-down appearance and atmosphere. In a dive bar, the drinks tend to be cheap and of low quality but frequently are of a high alcohol content.

A dive bar can be a wonderful thing. Though they may be dingy, and the regular crowd may be scruffy looking. A good dive bar is usually a friendly place. The drinks are cheap and strong. I always look for a good dive whenever I visit a new town. Just a suggestion, when going to a dive for the first time, take a friend in case the place gets rowdy. A little rowdy is OK, but if there's nightly fights, find another bar. The most important thing is to have fun and let your hair down.

I live in Baltimore and my favorite bar, which is one block down the street is constantly changing its name and decor but all the neighbors refer to it as the Dive. We call it the Dive because its been there forever, everyone in the neighborhood drinks there or at least eats chicken wings and watch sporting events, the prices are reasonable. Its a comfortable, popular place where we all go to hang. Its like Cheers, the bartender will remember you and will hook you up. Its a bar you don't feel bad about going in by yourself because you know you'll see a familiar face. A dive bar is you local pub.

A very low quality bar. Not upscale, not fancy, drinks are cheap. It's usually really dark and dirty. The one I used to go to had old wooden floors, black walls, the only lights were beer lights and a big screen TV. You had to get up to get your own drinks from the bartender, no servers. There was a jukebox and a pool table in back. The bathroom was scary. And they still permitted smoking so you always reeked. But it was the only place in town. Now THAT'S a dive.
