There's such a thing as theme overkill and incorporating paintbrushes into everything might be approaching that. LOL
However, if you can find cute stickers with paintbrushes or other artists things on them, you could do chocolates or whatever in small white boxes tied with a colored ribbon and sealed with the stickers for favors.
If they are artists, what better way to personalize their wedding than use pieces of their own artwork? They can create small pieces of art to be used as centerpieces. I like this Martha Stewart idea of using lighted pieces - she used photographs, but you could easily use paintings or drawings done on a lighterweight paper.

Have one sheet cake shaped like a big pallet - with colored Icing for the "paints" and a second sheet cake of the bride/groom gently perched on an easel as the "painting" Many cake places can scan/print a photograph onto a sheet cake. The Brush could be made from Pastilage or Marzipan etc.
Stop by your local art supply store - Michaels, Ben Franklin etc. - The Art Mart in Richmond, VA or Flax & Co if you're in Chicago - for good ideas. They may give a discount for buying in bulk. Doesn't hurt to ask.
How about a set of watercolors - which comes with a decent brush - Prang makes a good set.
Nice, soft camel hair paint brushes make wonderful makeup brushes - so don't be afraid to give paintbrushes as gifts. They're pricey tho -

For paint brush party favors...hmmm what about having paint brush shaped chocolates made up with artist palats to match? For the cake, they have cakes that can be "printed" with pictures, so y not take in a picture of their favorite painting and have it printed on the top of the cake with a gallery style frame bordering the edge. You could also hire someone to do an ice sculpture of like the "thinker" or "david"
for a center piece to the food or cake table or drink table.

You can do a starry night cake (van Gough) like this one seen here
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.zachscakes.com/images/cakes/artists_2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.zachscak
favors can be little paint sets $2.50 each
http://www.bigpromotions.net/item_information.cfm?SupplierItemGUID=78FFD595-2711-41F2-A98E-CE710248BBE7
you can hire a portrait artist to be at the wedding and paint guests portraits (kind of like on the streets of paris)
Name each table after a famous artist Michalangelo, Van Gough, Rembrant, Da Vinci etc.
Have each centerpiece be a painting of the cooresponding artists on easles back to back instead of flowers (print them out and paint brush strokes on top with clear varnish to make them appear real)
Hold the reception in a musem

For the wedding cake, do a traditional tier cake with little paint brushes made out of fondant (thats the stuff that they use to decorate alot of wedding cakes). They could actually paint decorations onto the cake with a thin frosting or food coloring. Place the paint brushes at the ends of the decorations to make it look like they were painting the decorations onto the cake themselves.
For place card holders you could make little easels out of cardstock or cardboard. To make them fancy add handmade paper or decorative scrapbooking paper to them.
Make your own wedding invitations and add smears of paint to border the words on the invite. Use artists paint brushes to add the paint using whatever matching colors the wedding will be decorated with.

For the cake, maybe a pallette of colours? Or a big flat cake, that is a copy of a painting, placed on an easel?
for the favours, little brushes and edible body paint?
little sketch books, with pencils,
how about the tablecloths being paper, and crayons/pencils on every table...have them 'draw the bride and groom' keep them as keepsakes.....

well in order for you to be sure of your date, you should find a ceremony and reception venue that is available. who knows, if you can't find a place to get married or have your reception on that date, you'll have to change it. then find a caterer, flowers, photographer, and cake. start looking at dresses for yourself and bridesmaids. once you get your date nailed down and you have reserved the venues, then throw yourself an engagement party if you want.

Skip the party favors. It's a wedding not a birthday party. You don't need a theme.
