Not only salt, but also sugar tend to drain bacteria. Bacteria consist mostly of water. As salt and sugar draw water from the surrounding area, bacteria get dehydrated until they can no longer survive.

Salty water is recognised as an effective sterilising agent and is often mentioned as a non chemical alternative for bathing wounds. I would say it can certainly help your mouth sores. Just make sure you don't put TOO MUCH salt in the water or you will just gross yourself out. A nice solution of salty water similar to ocean water will be fine. If any infections occur, keep an eye on it and if problems persist see a doctor.

It is because it cleans all of the bad bacteria away without killing your body's own defense cells. So, you are keeping the infected area clean while your immune system works. That's why you should use salt water and not Listerine or other antiseptics like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol. Sure you are killing the infectiion but you are killing your immune cells also. The same goes for any infected cuts/sores on your body. Warm salt water is always best.

Because salt is a disinfectant, it allows the body's natural healing processes to work unhassled by germs and bacteria.
