"I'll been done seen 'bout ever'thing when I see an elephant fly"

Why did it take them so long to stop showing all of those racist Tom and Jerry cartoons with the Black maid in slippers and the saggy socks?

No, it is because of the rising popularity of those shoddy and gloomy japanese cartoons.

I know it's awful to say "well it was more accepted back then, therefore we should show it. It's a sign of the times." But I think I actually have to agree with it.

Look, anyone who's brought up by any kind of decent parents knows the difference between right and wrong, and these things in these movies CAN be explained to them in a reasonable way.

These movies are still classics, and I think they should be seen, even on television. Maybe with a proper disclosure message (kinda like they have on some of the older Disney movies on DVD), they can be seen and loved by a whole new generation.

I don't agree with the racism in the films, but honestly, if they're taken out of our mainstream society, it's just another way of sidestepping the issue and not dealing with it...learning from it...seeing how far we've really come.

Seriously folks, if we just look at it another way, it doesn't have to be the horrible message we think it is...

They still have it at the library, and it's been restored plus bonus features. I think it's a very cute movie and I love the black characters; to take them out of the movie would remove much of the charm and diversity.

I'm not sure how it was racist if it portrayed a particular time for what it was. At the time, did they know how to portray the races in a different way? Times have changed now, and I'm sure if they remade Dumbo, it would reflect modern times.

First:

Why is this question in the Religion and Spirituality thread?

Second:

It's a cartoon. Cartoons play on cliches. Cartoons are a form of art...and art imitates life (or is it the other way around?). These cartoons are pretty old. They are reflective of the era in which they were made....so get over it.

I guess we should stop watching classics such as Gone With the Wind or Annie because there are blacks in them who were cast as slaves, maids and butlers?

Get over it. There are more important things to be concerned with in the world. Start with the education of today's children.

Oh, and there's no white trash on TV?

Black is black, white is white and brown is brown. It means nothing.

These are stereotypes - not real people and certainly not representations of real people, surely people know that?

Tom and jerry uses "shorthand" to get over a simple idea - humans don't understand how difficult life is for Tom, nor how clever at manipulating him Jerry is! IT'S NOT REAL!

What about Huckleberry Finn then??

They still show it over here, in the UK. It's on film 4 or something. Not only is it racist, but also REALLY CREEPY. A film about animal abuse in a circus, lovely. In the words of Family Guy

"That's good old fashioned family racism!"

That's why Song of the South won't be released on DVD, it's pure evil. I know a thing or two about evil, I'm Bob and I'm the devil. Walt Disney is in Hell right now, as he was a Nazi.
