I never saw the point, except in the political world he comes in handy. Look at the past thousand years.

Because Jesus realized we cannot have truth without unity, and we cannot have unity without true authority. That is why He entrusted to Simon the Apostle and his successors the keys to the kingdom, the universal symbol of supreme authority. And that is why the Church Christ founded on the Apostles remains united in belief, united in teaching and united in worship throughout the world after 2,000 years, while those who have rejected this God-given authority have a 500 year history of fragmentation, disunity, and doctrinal chaos. Christ stated His intent, "that they all may be one", and provided the means of having such unity. The Pope is central in Christ's plan for unity. Disunity results from rejecting His plan.

There is a Pope because Jesus gave up one.

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

With love in Christ.

Catholics can't handle abstractions such as god without a physical daddy interpreting for them everything that they should do. If they don't listen to daddy, it is everylasting hell. Some parents do that with their kids now as a way to try to control them. Unfortunately, it seems to work with Catholics.

Jesus knew that He was going to return to the Father and that He needed to appoint someone to be the shepherd of His people. He told Peter to "feed His sheep."

This is the role of the Pope - to be the shepherd of God's people until jesus Christ returns. The Pope guides the people, advises them, teaches them, and leads them.

The Pope sees himself as the servant of all Catholics. As a good shepherd, he sees himself as being responsible for the well being of all people. No, he does not expect anyone to love him, but like any shepherd, he does expect obedience.

Most catholics listen to him and take his advice.

Perhaps for the same reason people cannot tell the difference between "their" and "there."
