Windows 2000 may run better and still provide the same level of operability as XP.

But a version of Linux such as Ubuntu would run great... and it's free.

If you're not really willing to jump to a completely different platform, though, you might just try upgrading your RAM. That'd solve your problems right there, and it's fairly cheap.

128 mg will not let you do Visa (requires 1 Gig)
128 is the minimum needed to run XP. If you were to double that to 256 you would get tremendous increase in speed and responsiveness. I support a manufacturering site with about 800 computers in that range running XP on 256.
You would probably get better response using Windows 98 SE on only 128, but who wants to go back that far....
Avoid ME, it stinks.

Recommend: spend the $30-50 to increase the memory to 256 and run XP.

XP will do OK on that system. Back when XP came out most new systems had only 128 -256mb ram. BUT keep in mind, Windows XP SP2 would probably run alot better with 256mb.

I would use Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or if you aren't using networking such as server's or router's or home networking and just using the internet i recommend that you us Microsoft Windows ME (Millennium Edition) I hope this helps you!

You'd be able to get a cheap disc off eBay but make sure that you get a full version not an upgrade.

Still Win XP. Lots of drivers for it.The problem is you RAM, it's too small.

I have a Plll-500mhz w/ 3x128Mb RAM, 16Mb AGP card and USB wifi. I have no problem surfing the net even w/ MP3 playing on the side. I sometimes use it for DVD concert viewing, BUT NO GAMES. The games are at the other end of the KVM switch where my main rig is also hooked up.

with that rig xp will run fine. if:
the hdd is at least 25-40% empty,
get more ram, 128 will no longer cut it,

the processor will handle it tho, b/c ive have run xp sp2 on a 800 mhz , (remember those!) with 370 mb or ram, so just look online for deals, newegg is my fav usually very cheap,

I would just increase your memory to at least 512 MB and maybe look at a biggger/faster hdd. But XP should be good for that setup. Hope that helps.

Buy more RAM. If you can bump up the RAM size at least up to 512MB (1GB would be ideal), WinXP will run smoothly.

If looking at current hardware specs alone, Win2000 will run smoothly...
