For music you might want to look up more about the history of one area of music as a way of communication such as the Blues or ***** spirituals.

If you must limit the drama to the US then check out Kiss of the Spiderwoman and Madam Butterfly, If you wish to expand this look into Japanese Kabuki, very beautiful. And making a huge come back!
