I installed WIN XP SP2 . It is 1.5 year old.

You may have so many applications open....check the task bar...

Normally a PC may slow at shutdown if you have certain unwanted applications running in the background. Removing those applications would help. Try this:
1. Start>run>msconfig
2. Go to startup tab
3. Select the programs you want windows to load at start up.

yeah - mine takes a while, too
and I have a few memory errors - where my XP will not
take the new updates - have restarted every day for a week
then the help page for microsoft is so simple to read - I will
need to get the kid next door to decifer it
