I've just been revising maths with my son for SATs exams and they say find 1% then times that amount by the whole amount. Easy! Learning more now than I ever did at school.

Substitute the percentage for a decimal and multiply by that. For example - 17% of £25000.68
25000.68 x 0.17 = 4250.12
40% of £3000548.00
3000548 x .4 = 1200219.20

Just multiply it by the percentage value, then divide by a hundred. For example, 17% 0f 5,000,000 = 17 x 5,000,000 =85,000,000 knock off two zeros(dividing by a hundred) and you have 850,000

Move the decimal point two gigits to the left. (ie divide by 100) This gives you 1%
Then multiply the result by whatever percent you are looking for.
so to get 13% of 12345678
you get 123456.78 = 1%
then 123456.78*13 = 1604938.14

Try taking some zeros away or use the calculator on you computer as it allows for the use of many more digits.
