It's a function where every number in the range (the output of the function) comes from just one number in the domain (the input of the function).

An example of a one-one function is y = x. Every y comes from a unique x.

Contrast this with a many-one function like y = x^2. Here, all of the values of y except 0 can come from two values of x, e.g. 4 = 2^2 but also 4 = (–2)^2.

A function, f : A -> B, is injective or one-one, or is an injection, if and only if for all a,b in A, f(a) = f(b) => a = b.

Example: A = {3,4} and B = (9, 16, 20} and f (x) = x*x is a one - one function.

It is a function in which every member of the range is paired with exactly one member of the domain. y = x^2 is not one-one because 1 which is in the range is paired with 1 and -1 in the domain.
