They will not eat your plants, maybe some dead or rotten leaves, but not entire fresh leaves. I think goldfishes will nip more at your fresh water plants rather than an apple snail.

I dont know if they eat the plants I think they eat algae that grows in the tank. But what I do know is that its hard to have any other kind of life in with goldfish except the hard lookin cleaner fish (plecostomus) cuz of the ammonia goldfish let off. Thats why golds cannot be kept with other fish. And they need room temp or cool water no heater. And I aslo know snails are A-Sexual which means they do NOT need a mate to reproduce. The tiny little babies will get all over the tank they are so cute but they clog up the filter like crazy.

They would be compatible with goldfish, and would even prefer the cooler temperature than that of a tropical tank. Even though they are usually kept with tropicals, they have a longer lifespan when kept in unheated tanks - up to 10 years.

They are definitely plant eaters! And they have big appetities! But, your goldfish will also nibble on plants (and sometimes uproot them by rooting around in the gravel). You might want to reconsider using plants in the tank - even though planted tanks do look nice.

If you want a snail that will not bother your plants, look into Malaysian trumpet snails. These guys are small (usually less than 1") and burrow into the gravel during the day, and only come out at night. They'll eat detritus down in the gravel and algae, but will leave plants alone. only thins is, they will reproduce quickly if there's too much food available, so you have to keep up with vacuuming the gravel and not overfeed so you don't get overrun by these. The cooler temperatures of your tank will help, because they aren't as busy reproducing if the water is less than 75o.
