Typically both are equal but DDR2 is a newer version of DDR1. So, you cant possibly insert a DDR2 into a DDR1 machine but a DDR 1 can be inserted into a DDR2 motherboard.
But nowadays, Motherboard come with both DDR1 and DDR2.
The difference is the refresh and the data transfer rate of DDR2 is much higher than DDR1.

DDR 2 can run at twice the speed of DDR 1 (800mhz and 400mhz respectively). They are not compatable and will depend on what type your motherboard supports. DDR2 is recommended now because it has become the new standard, with DDR 1 being the outdated and soon to be unsupported option. If you have DDR1 stick with it but if you are looking at upgrading your system, DDR2 is definitely the best option

In short terms:
DDR2 is twice as fast as DDR1
however it has a different number of pins on the bottom (200 I think) instead of DDR1 which is 184. Result if you try to put DDR2 in a DDR1 slot the pins won't match up and it won't work.
So, if your motherboard is built for DDR1 you are stuck with it.

If you are thinking of upgrading I suggest you go to the following link, http://www.crucial.com/uk they can do an on line check which will determine which ram your motherboard supports. They will recommend the optimum amount. You can order on line and although they are not the cheapest it is worth paying for good ram. They guarantee compatibility with your motherboard and give an excellent warranty. They lso give fitting instructions. I have used them many times and always been satisfied. Hope this helps.

For lawrence....I got an older pc, 5 years old. A biostar mobo with an AMD duron 1.2 ghz with ddr ram. And you say 2 diffrent sticks of ddr ram cannot go together? Bull! I have a 256mb 266mghz stick with a 333 mghz 512mb stick in my puter and the puter recognizes both as 333mghz and sees it at 768mbs ddr ram. Explain that to me

DDR2 is newer (and faster). They are not compatible (different notch and number of pins). Thus it won't fit in a DDR1 socket.

HI there!
DDR1 ans DDR2 are totally different. One is PC3200 and the other is PC5400. there are other versions, but unfortuantly, you cannot mix and match. it is like PC133, and PC3200. these can not be mixed and matched.
If you want toal speed from your computer, say with DDR1, but if you want total reliability, go with DDR2.
