I'm 17 and in my last year of high school. This year I started a new school where I only knew a few people. I soon discovered that my new school was far less strict with our National Education Qualification than what I was previously use to.

I've been excelling in my classes and getting results far better than I have before and better than the other students. Hence they think I am extremely smart.

I've been getting comments like 'Sarah will get Dux' (top acidemic achiever) and talking about it behind my back.

So far I have been coping but I feel like they have already put such high standards on me. I do have goals for my future but 6months ago I wasn't even concerned about becoming Dux.

It would truely be an amazing achievement but how can I keep up this qualitly of work without now feeling pressure from my peers, teachers and parents?

Make your own desicions,do you want to follow this route ?I think you do but without the pressue from others just follow your own instinct ,you do not have to be pressurised because you have decided on the whole what you want ! Let them think about it if they want to .Bright students will always be commented on and Parents will always be proud ,Teachers will always want you to achieve the ambitions just make sure they are your own .As for your fellow students try to be a guide to them because of your status.I think you may have teaching abilities.

It is important , on today's society, to do well in school, but it is also the best years of your life so don't for get to enjoy them. Reach a place where there is balance between your excelling and being a normal 17 year old kid. Take advantage of the fact that you are getting an extensive review, but because it is a new school and there are the friendships to make, the boys to date, the higher goals to realize, take advantage of that too. Do what you fell is your best and then leave it at that. you will be fine whether you get Dux or not. This is only the first of such awards that you can have the opportunity to acquire. It most matters that you do not label yourself a certain stereotype, and then try to live life to that person, instead be yourself and be great.

When you grow up and get a job, nobody will care if you where Dux or not. Life is a place where you have to keep proving yourself over and over again, or you slip back into the crowd. Do what you do everyday and without regard to what anyone else thinks. You're born alone and you will die alone--they are not coming with you through THAT door.

These peoples' opinions mean nothing if you understand that you are at the centre of your own life.

Don't beat yourself up - first mistake. You obviously do have the ability to deserve such an acolade and there will always be those that scoff. After school things will be just the same so you have to keep focused on where you want to go and where you want to be. You choose your life plan and a life will choose you. If you worry about what others say or think you will be dragged down to that level and will never reach your potential. Go Girl!

Ultimately, who will get Dux, is not in your control. Your power, is limited to being a diligent student, i.e., doing your best. Apparently, your conduct has put you on the road to success. Please continue, the journey is more important than the end result.

Regardless, I wish you the best. You have my support, in your quest.
