I want to enter spanish letters that require the alt key held down plus 3 numbers, but that won't work without the numbers pad on my laptop.

Hit the "num" key, which will turn on the "numpad emulation" using some of your regular keypad keys. it'll probably be a slightly different color, often light blue.

Laptops do have the number pad. Take a look at the L key, you see the number 3 in a different colour, now you need to find the Num Lk key, hit the numlk key then the number pad keys will work.

OR use the character map which is in Start > All Programs > Accessories> System Tools. All fonts and all characters are to be founf here. Just copy and paste
