If you weren't aware, Florida goes through some droughts... we're in the middle of one right now.... Alligators wallow out gator holes in the marsh, assuring the presence of water in all but the dryest conditions. "Oh, that's nice that the alligator has water for itself." you say? It's not just for itself! Wild alligators only eat about 50 times a year on average. That's all. So yeah, some animals will lose their lives coming down to the water to drink, but also, alligators are messy eaters.... there's a lot of scraps to go around, and herons, egrets, fish, turtles, and anything else that wants scraps can share.

Alligators guard rookeries. It's hard to find a thriving bird rookery in Florida without an alligator or five. Any racoons, opossums, or other scavengers coming across to raid nests are eaten by the "security guard". Yes, some birds get eaten, but that's the price that is paid... most of these eaten birds are hatchlings and fledglings that have fallen from the nest, and not adult birds.

There's so much they're good for....

The American Alligator has made an amazing recovery in the last 30 years and is about to be removed from the endangered species list. So hopefully we won't have to answer your first question for many, many decades!
Why do we need them??? Every part of every ecosystem is important to the continued existence of that ecosystem. And they are all crucial to our own survival. Did you know that research is being done in crocodilians to find a vaccine against HIV. Crocodilians are immune to the AIDS virus and that immunity could be crucial to finding a way to fight its spread.
Maybe the question you should be asking is what are you doing to help the continued survival of earth??? Where will your grandchildren be growing up???

Have you ever been up to your *** in deer, possums
racoons, snapping turtles, catfish, and anything else a gator
can eat? without predators the prey gets crowded and sick
and starved of food.
