My mother used to go to St Patrick's Day marches when she was a kid in Perth. They were protests then against the British aristocracy and there influence in Australia. Those that marched were of Irish Catholic background.
As time passed, St Patrick's Day passed unnoticed. These days it's a commercial holiday that's not sanctioned. It's an excuse to wear green clothing, call yourself O'Finkelstien or O'Themopoulos or O'Nguyen or O'El Masri.
Just another hijacked holiday

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland (just as St. George is the patron saint of England) and March 17th is recognized as being St. Patrick's Day - a day of great celebration and merriment in Ireland. In England, however, due to the insane emphasis on political correctness (not offending other nationalities/religions who have decided to make their home in England), St. George's Day passes by hardly noticed. It is not a public holiday as St. Patrick's Day is a public holiday in Ireland
