i mean i know obviously you would feel what others were feeling, but does that mean emotionally as well as physically? or could you be an empath and only feel what people are going thru emotionally or just feel what people are feeling physically? what are some tell-tale signs that you are indeed an empath?

The following conditions must apply for an empath case:
The situation of another person is such that it is reasonable to expect certain emotional responses from him/her. One's situation is such that it is not reasonable to respond in the same way as the other person. But one responds in the same way. The empath's emotional response has to be more intense than sympathy.

That someone is an empath can be inferred from the discrepancy between one's internal disposition and one's situation and the compatibility between one's internal disposition and the other's situation. For example, if one feels grief but has not lost a loved one, and one is in the company of someone else who has lost a loved one one is most likely having an empath experience.

Some recent research indicates that there is no specific evidence for an empath in any paranormal way.

However, there are people that are highly empathic. This is the case because they are very sensitive to non-verbal communications, especially for this:

- Voice intonation
- Small changes and movements in facial expressions
- Breathing
- Skin color change (blushing)
- Sweat
- Odors for certain hormones (stress, etc).
- Muscle tension (in neck area)

Empaths are sometimes considered paranormal because they don't contiously interpret these signals. Most of the time they are uncontious and translated into emotions. Result: feeling the same way.

Thus, when you are sensitve to these things, you might me an empath

I suspect the precise definition is more detailed than what I am going to say here, but here goes. An "empath" used to be used to say a psychic reader could feel someone's feelings, both emotionally and physically. It was used to imply more than just dictionary defined empathy. That wouldn't really be a healthy thing to do, but some people convincingly say they do it, for limited times, while "healing" others, psychically.
The signs you are an empath would probably vary from person to person, but would definitely involve having some sort of psychic power. There are lots of books about the various types of psychics, so you can do lots of research.
To be classically empathetic would be a little more than just being understanding, but wouldn't have the psychic component. I'm using understanding here, to mean sympathetic to others.
I have a nerve disease that makes me hypersensitive to others. Since I have always been sympathetic and empathetic, my illness magnifies the effects of others' feelings, both emotional and physical. This is strongest when I am sickest. So I must be careful to pull back from being empathetic when I am not feeling well. It would be easy for others with this illness to mistake the hypersensitivity for psychic ability. Life is complex, isn't it?
If you are already empathetic, be careful to assure your needs are being met in relationships of any kind, so you aren't leaving yourself both physically and mentally exhausted by them.
