Actually it's the amount that you feed not how often that should be more important. It's easy to overfeed fish, especially when they come over when you're around the tank and "beg" for food. The companies that make the food want you to feed often, so they can sell more food.
As long as your fish aren't fry, what you should do is feed them and see how much they will eat in about 2-3 minutes (unless you have goldfish with telescope eyes, or the bubble or celestial eyes which don't have good vision, then allow them 5 minutes to eat). Give them that amount of food twice a day and no more. If there's any left over, use a net or siphon to take it out of the tank.
I would suggest feeding twice a day in this amount, but you can combine the total amount of food they should get in one day and divide it into three, four, or more feedings, just don't increase the total amount they get. Giving a variety of foods is best.

Once a day is plenty and only a very small amount just a little pinch, be careful not to over feed. The guy at the pet shop sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

Both are correct. The food company wants you to use as much food as possible. The pet store guy doesn't want you to over feed. Fish are healthiest when they eat several small meals a day, just like people. They can also get by very easily with one meal a day, no ham done at all.
The very important thing to remember is that of all the fish you could have got, goldfish are the messiest. They poop and make a bigger mess than almost any other fish(except carnivorous fish). That said, it is very important to keep the tank clean so that your nitrate and ammonia level do not get out of whack. If that happens, you will lose all your fish.
It is also healthiest if you can feed them a variety of foods, including one frozen food, like blood worms.

Feed him two times an afternoon. 2-3 cups of meals must be solid. Feed him while he wakes up, then provide him an hour outdoors. Then feed him some hours earlier he is going to sleep and provide him yet another hour outdoors top after he eats. If he gets obese, shrink the feeding to one million cup morning and nighttime. as long as you keep a on a daily basis ordinary, there's no incorrect answer. do exactly not circulate away his meals out all day with limitless quantities. he gets too fat.

Two or three times - but very small amounts each time -- In nature they are feeding or looking for food all the time. In a tank overfeeding is your worst enemy.
