i think its a good idea. its probably the only time where you can travel and have a good time. it also allows young people to decide exactly what they want to do, without pressure from friends and family. most of the time high school leavers get a uni course, then defer for a year or two anyway. so why not use the time to find yourself? most people say that taking time off is a bad idea, but come on, obviously they didn't do it else they will be saying go for it. but it all comes down to the individual person and what they feel is right for them. what you rather do? have the time now to travel and do whatever they please and enjoy the time off, or work and study their *** off and don't take time off until 10 or more years later?

It depends on what you do with the time off. If you go into the service, you will be the oldest freshman in your class when you go back. If you travel around the USA, you may find a job that doesn't require college and never go back to school, but those who do complete a college degree do get higher paying jobs. Its also true that one learns better when one is young. I would advise staying the course for the friends you make in college will last you your whole life.

If you can find a year to do an exchange (UK gap year) in another country either working your way round or study exchange the year you take will be one you never forget - you will grow, meet and make friends of other nationalities and return home with a changed perspective.
From experience use the year to travel - you'll not regret it!

it depends on the person, if you are sure it won´t stop you from going to college, then go ahead...especially if you have a plan for this year eg a year abroad...if your plans are not very clear though, it might be better to take time off right after college...I took 1 year off and it didn´t stop me from studying more afterwards...
