Dorothy Sayers - I like her because her people act real and joke and have fun, in addition to solving murders and assorted other crimes. I was so disappointed years ago when I read the last one because I knew she was dead and there would be no more; so I just reread them periodically.

I don't think I've read any Parker or Connerly, but my complaint about Patterson and Sandford is that the whole of their characterizations are centered on the plot with no relief. In Patterson's books there are mentions of the main character's family situation at times, but it is all fairly depressing, even the love. Do any of these people ever laugh, or act stupid or silly? Real people do, you know.

Their books are like television shows where no one ever watches television, and if fact, one never sees TVs on the sets, nor are they mentioned. To me life doesn't seem as unrelievably gloomy as portrayed in their books.

For the same reason Rex Stout, who created Nero Wolfe, would be my second choice. At least the books written by him; none after about 1965 or so when he died and someone else started writing them using his name. His characters have witty dialogue about other things than the murder, and do things not related to the mystery they are investigating; the plots are complex, and the characters interesting.

If you've never read either of these authors; give them a try, but I warn you, they are dead and there won't be any more books by them.

If you meant Michael Connelly, and his Harry Bosch series, then yes I prefer him over the other three with James Patterson coming in a close second.

I vote for James Patterson! His writing is truly inspiring to a novice writer myself!
