I have a 55- gallon saltwater tank with a few large pieces of live rock and a couple damsels. I noticed the other day on some of my live rock this very small thing (looks kinda like a feather duster) that kept popping in and out of a very small hole on the side of my live rock. What could it be? Is it bad? And how did it get there?

It probably is a feather duster. Not all are as large as the ones for sale. The undersides of my live rock have tons of them, and a few have red mouthparts (the "fans"). They were probably on the live rock when you bought it, you just never noticed them. One thing about the small ones that different form the bigger species - the tubes are calcified, and hard, not leathery like the large showy varieties. They also tend to occur more in colonies.

Most likely its a feather duster, i love feather dusters i have about 25 of them in my salt water tank, they come in many colors. The ones you probally have are the most common and there brownish, white. Feather dusters are very sencitive when it comes to scence. one small sound or move they will go right back into there little tube!
GOOD LUCK~~~!

It is most likely an aptasia. Spelling is probably incorrect. It is a living thing and is not good if you have live coral and anenomes. They can sting and hurt your anenomes if one moves into them. They are usually attached to the rock and sometimes open up. They do not harm the any fish. You can just go in and rip it out. Unfortunately sometimes with live rock you end up with some of those. You have to take the good with the bad, that is why they call it live rock. Nothing to worry about but you need to make sure you dont put any soft coral or anenomes in without taking the aptasias out first. Hope this helps.
