There are monkeys under the floor that pull them off and run them back to the other side as quickly as possible. Thats why sometimes you hear wierd noises on them.

They fall into the basement. There is a crew that checks them for defects (actually they look for lost coins, too) and then runs really quick under the floor to push them back through at the bottom of the track. Sometimes you see the escalators running late at night because they forget to unlock the door and let the step-fitters go home.

they follow you around moving underneath the floor with you until you return down on another escalator using the same step as before. almost like a stalker that wants to help you.

Here in the USA they go to China, where they serv as up escalators for our down, and vice versa.

The elves underneath the escalator dismantle the steps when they go underneath. They melt them down into liquid steel and reform them into new steps thus recycling the old steps. They then use paint and dirt to make them appear to be old.
