Bronz has it exactly right. The only reason anyone EVER starts smoking is because of peer pressure (unconscious or otherwise.) Nowadays, the only kids that will feel this peer pressure, are the ones that are trying the hardest not to fit in. In this generation, this is almost everyone. When I was a kid in the early 90s, everybody smoked to fit in, now they smoke to stand out ... but end up looking like sheep anyway. Kinda sad to be honest. Anyone who doesn't think they started smoking for any reason other then fitting in (or standing out) and being cool is lying to themselves. This includes President Obama.

I started smoking because all of the men I looked up to as a kid smoked. My dad, uncles, teachers, the Pastor of our church. It seemed as every man I knew smoked and It seemed like something you did as a man. None of the women I knew smoked, not one. I was in a hurry to grow up and I had good people for examples of how good men conduct themselves and it just seems like a natural progression to growing up. Back then people smoked on airplanes, in elevators, in the grocery store,[there was an ashtray at the ends of every isle of the store] you could smoke in line at the bank, while getting a hair cut at the barber shop, everywhere people went people smoked. They smoked in the basement of the church, but not during services, but everywhere else was accepted and NO one ever complained about 2nd hand smoke. Funny how times have changed. Now you can express your same sex love in public and kill babies with abortion but don't smoke cuz it'll give cancer to some guy 75 feet away.

I've never tried to smoke a cigarette. I couldn't stand the smell of them when my mother used to smoke them. It's a very bad habit..thank goodness I never tried them and got hooked. It's hard for people to quit.

Actually, I started smoking because my father looked at me and told me not to start smoking. BUT he had a cigarette in his hand. So for me, I learned by example.
