Heello Minnie, Sepharial one of the all time greats in western astrology has prescribed lucky gemstones for each month of the year.What is more is that the American asociation of jewellers has accepted Sepharial 's prescription as correct.Suggestions regarding lucky gems for each month of the year are therefore mentioned accordingly in the business cards of most jewellers.The world famous Indian astrologer Bejan Daruwala has also in his book 'Star Signs,Numerology and Chinese Astrology' mentioned about Sepharial's suggestions in this regard.And as you would have guessed by now Sepharial has suggested the 'Garnet' for January.It is for this reason that most answers point to Garnet as the lucky gem for you.I would also like to tell you that i too had accordingly prescribed "Garnet' to a January born friend of mine and he had reported getting great mental peace after wearing the Garnet.That is so far as the Garnet is concerned.
However i would like to say something more.Capricorn is a saturnine sign and according to vedic astrology the 'Blue Sapphire' vibrates most to the planet saturn.Thus many astrologers including Bejan Daruwala(in the same book mentioned above) suggest the Blue Sapphire for capricorn.My own book 'Analyse Your Date of Birth' also makes the same suggestion.I may mention here that the 'Blue Sapphire' is considered to be a gem capable of giving extreme results and i would therefore not normally mention about it without seeing the whole horoscope.However your birthdate being the 4th January,your birth number is 4 and numerology prescribes the 'Blue Sapphiire' to birth number 4 persons.Thus Blue Sapphire may work better in your case than the Garnet.However the Blue Sapphire being prone to giving extreme results(both ways positive or negative) is generally tested before being worn .The method to test it is that the gem is to be kept in a black cloth and the cloth is to be tied on the wearers arm in a manner that the gem does not touch the wearers skin.This may be kept like that for say a week or ten days.If this period passes peacefully then one can wear the gem in a ring so as to touch the skin.There is no problem in getting the gem for testing for jewellers are aware about this practice of testing the Blue Sapphire before wearing and therefore they give the gem on loan for the period of testing.

I thought birthstones went by months... Sun signs don't go by months, so I'd assume that one can't tell what your birthstone is just by knowing your sun sign.
