I totally agree with you. My grandparents came to the U.S. from Puerto Rico in the mid 50's. A good friend of theirs gave them English lessons twice a week, and slowly but surely they learned the language. They immersed themselves in learning the language because they knew that in order to get ahead and prosper in this country you need to know how to communicate with the rest of the population. Now mind you, they didn't have the resources that non-English speakers have now (e.g. free English lessons, bilingual schools, bilingual customer service). I just wish they were as eager to assimilate as others have done in the past. They probably think that once they become "Americanized", that they'll soon forget who they are (culturally) and were they've come from.

I'm not sure if you exactly call this racist.... because immigrants can be white too.
Well I do believe that any immigrants should be able to integrate the canadian culture as well... but it is a matter of choice. It is good if you want to communicate with others. Canada is represented by a cultural Mosiac, so I also believe we shouldn't force anyone to learn it (if they don't want to). It's their choice if they choose to have a hard time talking with other english-speaking people in public places. English is a dominant language, however if they haven't spoken that language in their life, the older they are, the harder it is learn another language (it is explained in pyshology). I always find that the younger ones learn faster.
I can speak 3 languages, and I often forget how to speak or write because others don't speak the same language. I was born in Canada, and I am somehow embarrased that I can't even speak my own language (other than english)

I find it rude to talk in a forgien language amongst people who do not speak the language, but that doesn't mean they should be forced to speak English, just be polite and try not use it amongst those that cannot, it comes off as offensive. For instance I worked in a very diverse workplace once and the Haitians would look at you and talk in French. Anyone with common sense could tell they are talking about you and you can not defend yourself because you don't know what they are saying.

Yes if they come to our country they should adjust to us. I have to do the same when I go there! Here in NYC they have everything in English and Spanish do ya think they do the same for us?? The answer is NO! Oh and I will never live in France. 99% of the ppl I met there were so rude to me and have a general dislike of americans. How do they know I wasn't Canadian? Just rude =/

Yeah nicely immigrants seem "ghetto" , via fact they go away their domicile usa and are available right here to start from scratch , so that's harder for them to get by ability of . i don't help unlawful immigration i don't think of that's being racist , i don't care if the unlawful is white , African,Mexican regardless of unlawful is illegitimate , and it will possibly be punished not rewarded . that's not racism that's the regulation. I do think of even with the incontrovertible fact that that some immigrants who come right here legally are welcome and definitely make a contribution to society in assessment to illegals.

think about this, all popular western countries have multi cultural aspects within, its like asking someone they must have a hot dog instead of sushi, every educational establishement focuses on different languages too, learning it is a personal choice. people choosing to speak a different language is also a personal choice, freedom of choice and freedom of speech doesnt apply to people who occupied a country all their lives, it applys to people who contribute to world economy. i live in britain born and bred, and 99% of people that degrade me and make me angry are my own fellow citizens. think about that

Yeah they scamper over here to have a better life and curse us every chance we get. Unbelievable and ungrateful. Now why can we not do the same in their country? Umm maybe we would be killed on sight. America needs to wake up. Its like letting someone who hates your guts move into your house with you and your family and they abuse you day in and day out. Its a crying shame.

Agreed, it's expected of us when we go to their country they should either respect ours and show the same or get back on whatever plane, train, automobile, or ship to take them back if they want to chant in foreign tongue and practice their own culture and custom in public. It's plain rude, not social, and very disrespectful.
