Flint knapping can be a fine art. Many different materials are used, chert (a form of flint) is one of the most commonly used materials both historically and contemporarily. Even with chert there are many subtle varieties, and flint knappers often trade raw materials and have favorite varieties from specific bedrock formations.

It takes a great deal of time to master the art, by the time you learn the basic mechanics you will be very familiar with the different varieties of flint and other material suitable for use.

There's a really boring, but very informative video named "flint knapping with dr. bruce bradley".

Obsidian was the most widly used for arrowheads and spearpoints in the southwest because it was abundant, and much easier to knapp than chert. Obsidian is a form of volcanic glass (hardness 5) whereas chert and flint are forms of microcrystaline quartz (hardness 7).
