I have heard that salt can be harmful to corys but what exactly does it do to them? My cory is in a 29 long with 5 guppies and I have added close to 4 tablespoons of salt to the water for electorlytes and disease prevention over a period of time.

In small amounts like you are using it won't harm them at all. In higher amounts it can cause them to have problems with osmotic regulation and can cause swelling of their gills.

Their ancestors of left the ocean a long time ago. Like most catfish they can't deal with much in the way of salt. It will tend to stress them out and make them more prone to disease. Guppy really don't need salt. I'd more concerned with the water hardness with guppies than electrolytes.

For short term use like treating ich, it's fine, if added very slowly. Salt is really only beneficial to fish when treating for ich, fungus, or high nitrite levels. Here's a long article on what types of salt to use and when it's actually beneficial to use:

oftentimes one tablespoon for each 5-10 gallons (oftentimes one million in line with 10 gallon on condition that gravel, fish and each thing soak up area too and tank won't be precisely 20 gallons it may be 19.4 or some extremely weird and wonderful quantity)
