When there is no unity in the team, there will not be team spirit and it will defenitely affect the performance of the team.

I would look at this problem with an example. Even any Blue-chip organisation stuffed with PhDs and MBAs and what not in their Head Offices and also best workers and management with good remuneration and perks at the factory level would destined for failure in the long run if there is not effective communication at lateral and vertical levels.

It the allegation of "Sr. Indian cricketers weren't in talking terms" is true then I will say that what the BCCI and Team Manager were doing to mend this differences? It is always the higher-ups those are responsible for the failure of an organisation, the same as government is responsible for the failure of country.

So, the answer to your questions is YES it must have affected a lot and the time has come to emphasize on team spirit and avoid giving a few players "Hero's" treatment, which is also impediment in getting 100% performance from the rest.

It had to have an effect, its obvious India are not a team, they are just out for themselves

But also remember, India are not even that good, their batting can be, but SL and Australia have good batting lineups too, compared to their bowling lineups, India look like a Kid's B team.
