Deer ticks can sit on limbs of trees and many months but they can detect warm blooded animals and immediately drop onto them. Wood ticks can go dormant also but I dont think for as long as deer ticks. Deer ticks are very small, less than the head of a pin , but can carry disease like wood ticks.
You could use a spider spray or spider type bug bomb, but you will need to remove pets, people, open food, pet food and pet and children's toys from house prior to using.

Ticks live most of their lives on the ground waiting for a host to come by, so the answer is, yes. They can live in the carpet for quite a while.
Here's more info about them: http://www.pestproducts.com/ticks1.htm#Tick%20Life%20Cycle%20and%20Habits

From what I understand, ticks are omnivores and it's the females that drink blood so they can lay fertile eggs. Many insects have really slow metabolisms that allow them to live weeks between meals.

Not very long, they live on blood from the animals, and there is no blood in your carpet. You should use a powder in your carpet to kill them anyway so they don't jump back on you or your animal, good luck
