For being a dictator who kept his people in constant fear for their lives until his death. He killed more people then Hitler, more of his own people even. He did not trust anyone and drove both of his wives to kill themselves. When his son was in a German POW camp during WWII he refused offers to trade him for a German general and as a result his son died. It has been shown that at the time of his death, Stalin was planning a purge of the Jewish doctors in the Kremlin.

"Uncle Joe" was known for his rude behaviour, his hard drinking, and he enjoyed watching the popular movies of his time. He sounds like a lot of North Americans, doesn't he?

his purges, before WW2 he killed over half his armies officers, leaving them in a poor state to fight germany, he also casued the deaths of tens of millions of his own people by starvation and executions and banishments to siberia
much of this done through industrial reforms, the 5 year plans
