I am curious about this. I am a women. I was in a conversation with some friends and this came up. No one had an answer. So I pose it to all of you. For men going into and completing the transexual stages, how do they get rid of the facial hair? I mean I have never seen a transgender man with facial hair.
Please post serious answers only. Thank you

I understand the shaving, but don't they give them some sort of hormone therapy also?

I would like to apologize to all I may have offeneded by not referring to you the proper way. I was not aware of this, but thank you for the education and answers.

Typically it's polite to call a transsexual by the gender they become not the gender they started as. (thus transsexual man would typically refer to someone who was a woman and became a man)

That said I'll go ahead and answer your question. The two main types of permanent hair removal used are electrolysis and laser. Laser works best on people with dark hair and light skin tone, and even with ideal candidates usually never gets rid of all the hair. Electrolysis is slower and must treat individual hairs. A probe is inserted into the hair follicle and electric current is used to create either heat or chemical energy (or occasionally both) to destroy the root of the hair. Electrolysis is more likely to be permanent but is slower and thus can be more expensive.

Transsexuals do undergo hormone therapy with the hormones of the gender they are transitioning to (estrogen or testosterone depending) and in male to female transsexuals there is also generally use of drugs that block the action of testosterone. However, hormone treatment almost never causes beards to disappear on its own, thus the other techniques used. Hormone treatment causes certain secondary sexual characteristics to manifest.

Estrogen generally lowers or eliminates male pattern body hair, sometimes slows the growth of the beard but almost never stops it, causes softened skin, and redistributes body fat a little resulting in a more feminine appearance.

Testosterone on the other hand increases muscle growth, causes the growth of facial hair (which is generally permanent even if hormone therapy is later stopped), causes the growth of male pattern body hair, can cause male pattern baldness if it runs in the family of the person taking it, and causes the voice to lower.

Edit: it wasn't part of the original question but since one of the other answers mentioned it I thought I'd add that in male to female transsexuals estrogen has no effect on the voice. Unfortunately when testosterone causes the voice to drop it's a permanent change, male to female transsexuals simply have to change their voices through hard work, some do so on their own and some have enough trouble that they need to work with a voice coach to get it right. There are a few forms of surgery to raise the voice now, but they tend to produce bad results and are risky. Based on everything I've seen and heard of them, I wouldn't recommend them except in the most dire situation.

Edit redux: and yes as Phaedra said... permanent hair removal HURTS!

I just had my second laser treatment on Wednesday. I wouldn't recommend it without a good reason; it hurts. It's like having a really bad sunburn and it makes your skin smell like REALLY burned popcorn. I had to get dermablend to cover up the redness. But if it gets rid of the hair, so be it. I imagine I'll have to have a little electro done afterwards to get stray hairs... but that will still probably be cheaper then full electro in the long run.

Most of them take Premarin, it is an oestrogen producing hormone that comes from horses. There are other types but this according to most transexuals is one of the best. It more or less halts facial hair growth and what hair does grow, after a few weeks of taking the hormone, will be fair and thin as if on a real womans face. It is relatively strong and is one of the prescribed drugs for transexuals looking to undergo SRS (sexual resassignment surgery) as part of the required hormone treatment (normally 2 - 3 years) before they are permitted by law to have the surgery. You can buy it online, or have it prescribed by your Doctor. Good Luck!
