Has anyone succesfully set up a wireless home network with a Bigpond wireless broadband service?

Question

I have a laptop which has the USB wireless modem attached, the PC can access the laptop via a wireless network with the exception of internet access, Telstra told me it could be done while a PC company in my area said it couldn't be done.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it? Both computers are Windows XP and I am using a D Link wireless router.

ok, just to let you know up front, the thing that is making this difficult for you is the fact that you are using a USB modem and not a ethernet modem. If you were using a ethernet modem you could connect it straight to the router and be done with it.

That said you can do it the way you have it hooked up, but it is more difficult.

Here are the Physical Connections:
-Modem connected to PC #1 using USB connection
-Wireless Routers Ethernet Port #1 to PC#1 Ethernet Port.
*Note* Do not use the routers WAN(Internet) Port as this port is only used to connect to a broadband modem.
-Install a wireless adapter in PC#2

Now on PC#1 you need to turn on ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). This is a Proxy Server that will allow you to connect your USB Internet Connection with your Ethernet Network Connection.

On PC#2 you need to set it to connect to the internet through another computer.

That should do it........

I don't know Bigpond, but your network should work regardless. As long as your router is able to get to the internet, then the router should pass information to and from the computers on the inside and connect to the internet via the router. Make sure that both computers are connected to the router and that the cable modem is connected to the routers internet port with cat 5 cable. Then you will have a home network where both computers can share files and printers and can communicate with the internet via the router>cable/dsl modem connection.
