When you get upset, anxious, depressed, etc.

If so, what is it?
What do you do?
Does it work?

When I get really upset and anxious (I am bipolar) I count by either 6 ,7's or a number that once you start getting high enough you really have to start thinking. By this time you have put your thought into something else and what was upsetting you doesn't seem so bad. It helps me and my step son that has ADHD. It sounds silly but give it a try!! Good luck!

I try not to get upset. But when I do, I rethink what got me upset and try to work it out so that it won't continue. I think of the philosophy that Mr. Spock uses on Star Trek (I've seen all the shows many times). It calms me down also, makes me realize its just a part of life and that I can overcome it by rejecting what got me upset. It works for me!

I like to listen to music when I'm upset. I helps me to calm down and recollect myself, that works for me. I also like to go outside, like if I'm at work. I sit outside for a few minutes and get some fresh air. I'm a people watcher so I just watch people walk by and that takes my mind off of the stress.

It's not a ritual as much as it is a quirk of mine...I try very hard to calm down by breathing in long, slow, and easy. I tune the world out as much as possible, and... I rub the bridge of my nose with my index finger...That is how my husband knows to back off!!

I do deep breathing exercises.

Yes it is basic yoga

Breathe in through the nose slowly hold and release slowly through your mouth. Exhale air out your mouth pushing as much out as possible.

repeat these steps slowly a few times.

It is calming and helps me fall asleep at night

I do lamaze type breathing sometimes....I'll do word find puzzles just to get my mind off what's bothering me or freaking me out. And yes, it works most of the time. But sometimes I just need to sit down and have a good cry

a nice stiff drink or two before bedtime. Sometimes if I know I need to get up early- I will go to bed early and take some benadryl- knocks me right out for like 5-7 hours.
