Complicated question, but probably a simple answer of no.

There are virtually an infinite number of things that can slow down your computer, but in realistic terms, I wouldn't say that desktop icons would be one of them, unless you have so many that they completely fill the screen and have become a useless form of iconic application shortcuts. Even then, it's far more likely that the applications to which those shortcuts point, *if running in the system tray*, would be a cause of a slow PC.

That said, it would be far more comprehensive for me to ask what the components of your PC are, i.e., CPU, Memory, Operating System, Hard Disk Drive capacity and sapce available, etc. to answer your question more completely.

No, it will basically makes no difference at all, (the difference is so minor, you will not detect it) those are only shortcut icons, they do not indicate running programs. The desktop background picture uses far more resources than the icons.
It is the icons down in the right corner of the screen, near the clock, that indicate processes that are running. Those will slow down your computer, because they are using RAM.

Not necessarily! If there are 'programs' connected to all those icons it's a different story! Any of the stuff that's installed on your HD makes it run slower. If there are several programs on there that you don't use, uninstall or delete them. You can also defrag & compress your files & that will help with the speed a little bit. Go to your "all programs" site & look at all the stuff you have installeld. If you don't use it, get rid of it. But be sure it's not necessary for programs to function normally. Almost forgot! Having a dial-up modem is a sure fire way to have a slower response. DSL, cable, etc. definitely improve your 'speed'! If you can't afford it like me, you're stuck with a slower speed than average!

I think you are referring to shortcuts? My husband and I had work done on our computer by a friend. He did say that the more shortcut keys we have on the desktop slows the computer down.
