He started to walk away, Dean came into the picture and told him to watch behind him, because the guy got up (I don't know his name) and he stabbed Sam in the lower back. Sam died with Dean holding him.

Sam didn't slash anyone's throat, he left the army guy lying unconscious on the ground, then Dean and the other guy show up, the army guy wakes up, stabs Sam in the back and runs off.Dean's left holding a dying Sam and the other guy goes chasing the army guy.

Sam is stabbed and looks like he dies but
next week in the conclusion of the season finale, the fight between jake and sam is over and Dean is left to handle the fallout, but being involved could cause him great loss; and the hunters are menaced by the Demon and his spirits. This is the beginning of them trying to save the world.

It looks as if Sam has died, but since it's "Supernatural" and he's the main star of the show, I would say that it's doubtful that he really is/will stay dead.
Next week is the season finale.
