I'm a native of Connecticut, and I'll warn you now: a lot of CT's beaches aren't that good. That's why my family always goes up to Rhode Island, to Misquamicut Beach every summer. It's about a two hour car drive from New Haven, and Portland is much more north, so it should cut down the travel time considerably. In fact, you'll probably reach Rhode Island faster than you'll reach Long Island. If you want directions on how to reach this beach, just go to Mapquest.

And if you do decide to go to one of CT's beaches, I'll give you my recommendation: Mystic. It's a beautiful port town along the coast of Long Island. Just do me one favor: DO NOT GO TO LIGHTHOUSE POINT BEACH! Worst one of them all. Happy beaching!

Eric's answer is right on point.

If you want to Google your question, just type in "Public beaches in Connecticut."

If you want to cook a good pot roast, just type in "Pot roast recipes."

Google is easy and can save you a lot of time.
