I have a final project to do and I need to know how to name acids, polyatomic ions, covalent compounds and such like that. Thank you

2 carbon eth
3 carbon prop
4 carbon but
5 cabpon pent
etc.

suffix
no double bonds ane
one or more double bond ene
one or more triple bond yne

post suffix(??)
alcohol ol
carboxilyic acid oic acid

examples

propanoic acid is 3 carbons with no double bonds and a carboxilic acid group

pentan2-ol is 5 carbons with a alcohol group attach to the 2nd one

2-pentene is 5 carbons with the double bond at the 2nd one

First, you need to access the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. They and their committees set and settle all issues of nomenclature. For organic compounds, go to the "Handbook of Chemistry & Physics." They give rules in the section immediately preceding the table of properties of organic compounds.
