I'm writing a play set during the American Revolution and one of the characters insults the heroin. What were some derogatory words that they used back then? No curse words please!

See if you can find a copy of the book "Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue." It is full of just such words as you would be searching for. My favourite is "laced mutton".

First of all = it's heroine - heroin is a drug. He could call her a tart, a wench, a whore. There is a book out there called Descriptionary which is great for period terms = I use it for the proper terms for clothing, transportation etc of a certain period. If you are writing period pieces, you really need one! Pax - C

Derogatory words are used as curse words. See 'strumpet' and trollop' too.
