I've been researching on how to become a pharmacist (in the U.S.and am very confused about which is the best way. I'm going to be a senior in HighSchool next year and am stressed about how to become one. I've heard that it can take from 6-8 years so far. So far I heard two ways:
1.)Take 2 years of pre-requisite program (I don't know what the course is called-pre-med? will any pre-course count?) and then about 4 years of pharmacy school.
2.) Have a major in biochem. or chem. (are there any other majors I can take?) to get a bachelor degree (takes 4 years) and then transfer to a 4 year pharmacy school.

You can get accurate information about pharmacy by looking at the website of the Association of American Colleges of Pharmacy. AACP.

They list all the properly accredited Colleges of Pharmacy in the US such as U of P, URI, St Johns, Northeastern, etc. You can look at the list and choose some schools near you, or that you are interested in, and then look at the website of those schools for the particular information about how that school works.

Pharmacy is tough to get into, and tough to study, but the rewards are great - interesting jobs in hospitals, research or retail with very high pay and great job security. You will need to have a very good background in chemistry, so study hard in AP Chem in high school. If you do well there, then you have a decent chance of a career in pharmacy.

You can do either of those two choices. The first thing is called pre-pharmacy program and you need to take specific classes based on the school you want to go to . You do this one straight from high school. You can go ahead and start applying for pharmacy schools now. You will need to take and do really well on the PCAT. But if for some reason you dont get in now you can go ahead and do at least two years of the prepharm classes and then reapply or get a four year degree. Most people have a BS before going to pharmacy school. Typically people have a biology or chemistry degree of some sort. Good luck.

Both paths are valid. Right now, overall, half of all pharmacy students have bachelors. You should look at 6 year programs like at Ohio Northern and St. Louis COP.
