PSP help needed!?

Ive been noticing various types of PSP's. What do people mean when they say something like its a 1.5 not a 2.0 ? Theres a "core" version and "____" whats next? much appreciated!

The PSP Systems software known has firmware has various versions. The current firmware version is 3.40. Previous firmware versions included 1.5 and 2.0.
