The difference between thrust and horsepower, and how to convert between the two is a very common question. The problem is that these quantities are not directly related, so it is not simple to convert one to the other. The dictionary defines thrust as a force or pressure exerted on an object, and it is typically measured in units of pounds (lb) or newtons (N). Power, however, is a measurement of work, which is defined as the amount of motion a force creates when it is exerted on a body over a certain amount of time. Power is typically measured in units of horsepower (hp) or kilowatts (kW). The most common equation used to relate these quantities is as follows.

P=Fxd/t

where:

P = power (Hp)
F = force (Lbs thrust)
d = distance
t = time

So in other words, there is no linear conversion. BUT, as a general rule for boat thrust and horse power, here are some common numbers used for comparison. Do not hold me to these, they are "general" rules.

1Hp=15-18 Lbs thrust (sometimes)

So, in general, a 3 hp gas engine will give you about 45-54 lbs of thrust, depending on the efficiency of your prop, and how fast your going.

I know it's confusing, but I hope that helps. Happy boating.

The largest trolling motor in creation might give as much thrust as a good 2 cycle 3HP gas motor. At trolling speeds it may not matter, but there is really no comparison in power.

Lets see, trolling motors thrust is mesured in lbs and outboards are measured in HP. Find perhaps a trolling motor with 300 lbs of thrust might come close. Just guessing. Pops

not sure it would have to be up there, a 3hp electric motor it pretty large and heavy, you would probably need more than one to equal a gas motor
