Too bad it's not a 'living wage' for most small business owners. Just because something looks good on the surface doesn't mean it's wise. Don't forget - a poor man never gave anybody a job. If the rest of the nation follows Maryland's lead, prices will skyrocket (much faster than the raises we'll all need to pay for higher prices on the goods we need), all wages will have to go up, (probably before the companies who will be supplying the money for the raises actually see increased profits from their increased prices) because the people who are currently quite satisfied making $12.50 an hour will no longer be satisfied that their bachelor's degree is only worth $1.20 more per hour than the kid who isn't done with high school. Soon, goods will cost more than a person who only makes $11.30 an hour can afford, and they'll be back in the same boat. In short, economic followed shortly by social collapse.
Increasing the minimum wage by nearly double the Federal minimum was irresponsible! Do they honestly suppose business owners pull money out of their armpits? Trickle up has never worked except during a brief period of time when the unemployment rate in this country was at a rate never before, or since, seen; prior to the time when banking laws had a chance to become effective after the banking fiascoes of the 1800s, and during an ACTUAL economic collapse. Of course if the goal is to create economic collapse, so as to recreate a situation in which trickle up will actually work - well good luck. People had a work ethic back then.
The living wage is a fallacy - most people don't live on minimum; they either work more hours, or find a way to earn more.
Please take a course in Macro economics. This was a stupid move on the Maryland legislature's part, and all Marylander's will live to see the hard lessons in Macro economics lived out in their state. Too bad Maryland's legislators either don't know this basic information, or didn't have to stones to tell their constituents that this will be bad for them, even if it feels good.

This is only for government contractors. How many people in the state of Maryland are contractors? It doesn't affect the workers at McDonalds or Walmart so it will only help a tiny segment of the state. I'm originally from Maryland and know the cost of living there, 11.30 and 8.50 per hour isn't enough to live on. Nice gesture though. Sure to win votes from some people.

That living wage is great but I hestitate because that is going to decrease the amount of jobs on the market which in turn increases the unemployment rates. I do not know the details but I hope that Maryland eases into this drastic increase so there is not as much of a shock to the small business owners. WI minimum wage right now is at 6.50 and they have done gradual steps into this. The last I heard, which has been awhile, they are supposed to increase the minimum wage again to just above 7.00. Even this has sparked agruments. I only wonder what business owners in Maryland are saying.

It's okay but usually as soon as minimum wages go up so do the price of goods and your wages end up with same purchasing power as they did before. Also employers cut back on benefits and delay pay raises for all other employees that were already making above minimum wages.

The Republicans would have you believe different but the economy is best where the Minimum Wage is the Highest.
Trying to undercut North Korea to get your old job back at the Ford Plant Doesn't work.
California by itself is the sixth largest economy in the world.
Many places there have minimums over $10.00 and Poverty levels of $38,000.00 a year.

It does not help! Prices of good and services will go up. If people want better paying jobs then they should become qualified to do those jobs. Eleven dollars an hour to dip ice cream! Ridiculous

Conn - $7.40, Vermont - $7.25, Rhode Island - $7.10,
