They did not call them engines, they called them INJUNS, just short for Indian.

Not a good basis to answer on but I watch some really old fogey westerns cuz my husband likes them for some reason but it seems to me that the cowboys were just too dang lazy to say 3 syllables and shortened it to INJUN

Because the Spanish were so use to trading with INDIA (the spice trade) that when they first saw Native Americans they mistakenly thought they were the same people on a different Continent.
