The 316i, with a 4 cylinder engine; would save you on fuel cost. But it only has 102hp.

The 320i on the other hand has a 6-cylinder engine with 150hp - that's almost 50% more power.

Regular maintenance is also cheaper since the 4-cylinder 316i takes less oil (4.25 litres). The 320i requires 6.5 litres of engine oil. With BMW requiring ONLY synthetic oil, it makes a difference in your wallet every oil change.

I recommend you test drive both cars and see if you can live with the 316i's lower power for the cost savings.

The specs I quoted are UK specs, since there're no 2000 E46 316i or 320i in the US (and I presume you are not in the US either).

The 316 of those years had a four cylinder 1895cc motor. Four speed auto. (I presume you are writing from the states). A bit underpowered and will take forever to get up to speed. Runs well once you are on the open road, and very economical on the open road. A brilliant vehicle for someone who's never in a hurry. Good overall fuel economy The 320i had 2171cc motor. 5 speed auto box. The stick-shift model had the tendency to stall easy on the pull-away when the revs were too low. Can get very thirsty if you keep the hammer down. I loved the torqueness of the 4 cylinder. I hated the 320 in a stick shift due to the need for revs and tendency to stall easy, but it was a much smoother vehicle to drive once rolling. Both cars are so similar with regards to their overall fuel economy, that fuel economy alone should not be the deciding factor as to which of the two vehicle you want to own. Its really up to you to decide which one you like the most after you`ve driven them, as they differ vastly in character.

I'm selling a 1996 Z3 1.9 that has about 240 horsepower - supercharged, cams, aluminum pistons, total suspension, 19" wheels, + + > see my 360 for photos.
