You took the words out of my mouth--self conscious does seem to have a negative connotation.
A self conscious person probably fears the criticism of others. The self-conscious individual is hypervigilant and judges how others act towards him or her.
The self-aware person is probably focused on how he or she is behaving toward others. The self aware person is sensitive and empathetic towards how others interpret his or her actions. He or she is less egocentric because this individual understands that their actions have an effect on others and can change his or her behavior depending on the situation.

Hope these ideas are helpful,
Miche

Self conscious is being aware of your self such as how you act what you say and how you feel.. Being conscious is to be aware of what's going on around you. People are conscious all the time and not self conscious even though they should be.l

Self-conscious is usually a term used to describe someone who is over sensitive about themselves. Self-aware is the reverse, it is someone who knows a lot about themselves and is happy with what they see. It is interesting is it not as both terms seem to say the same thing. It's a strange thing the English language!!

people who are self conscious have something about themselves that bothers them wether it be physical appearance or mentally/personality related and they are concerned about what others think. its like their thoughts are nagging them and saying "somethings wrong and everyone knows it". its a feeling of exposure

Self awareness is being accepting and content with who you are.
