that black smoke cloud that causes the ground to poof up? It's called the Monster.
It makes a crackle noise, the ones that, when you're camping at night in the woods, scares the bejesus out of you.
It also flashes scenes from your life (or something to that effect) when you stare at it.
Locke and Eko faced it. I think it eventually killed Eko.

the "others" say its a security system..so, but its in the form of a black cloud. weird, huh?
