colors develop over time. one of my males, over the past year has darkend greatly in golor, except for his finnage he looks almost black now.

females will appear to have vertical or horizontal "barring" or stripes when very stressed or anxious to breed.

if he's become more pale, it may be a result of stress or improper feeding. if he's more vibrant, you're doing great.

bettas will flourish in warmer waters, 75-85 F there abouts.
you can buy a 7 watt heater for under $10 depending on the size of his habitat that may be a good choice to help him along either way.

you can message me with any other concerns.
good luck

The people at your pet store don't know anything. Bettas can change color if they're happier and healthier than they were at the store, or if they're stressed or don't feel well. If he's duller and brown, definitely make sure his water is clean and there are no other signs of illness. If he's brighter or getting new vibrant colors that probably just means he's happier

They can. It depends on what the color change is as to if this is a problem. The colors will pale or become dull if the fish is stressed. Females can get brown with horizontal lines ( see photo: http://www.jjphoto.dk/fish_archive/aquarium/betta_splendens2_x.jpg ) when they're stressed about something, or they can get vertical stripes (http://www.flippersandfins.net/Images/BettaFAQMGFemale.jpg ) to show a male that they're ready to spawn.

If you bought one that was kept in poor condiotions in the store and provide him with better care, he may get even better colors than when you bought him.

If you describe the color change (from what to what) in more detail, maybe we can give you a better idea if you've got a problem or if this is normal.

Well I'm not sure from the pet store. But in the wild there colors become more vibrant or bright when disturbed or agitated. Colors also become dull when fish is in stressed.

yes bettas can change colour, because if you are feeding it a certain food it might be bringing out more colours in it, i dont think that anything is wrong with it.
